After what seems like an endless number of false starts and delays, Shiny's Messiah finally made it onto the shelves early in the 21st century. Fitting, as the action is actually set in the very same time period. Messiah is an unusual premise, and no mistake. What could be loosely described as an action/adventure title, features no bulging bicep-festooned tough guy, nor an unfeasibly proportioned buxotic bimbo as it's main character. Our hero, or anti-hero depending on your outlook, is a cherubic child, complete with kiss-curl and wings as white as fresh snow. Do not however be fooled by this kid's innocuous appearance. Bob, for this is the name by which he is known, has been sent down to Earth to sort out the wheat from the chaff, the good, the bad and the ugly, to coin a couple of phrases. Bob's sole weapon is his ability to inhabit the body of any living thing he comes across, be it human or animal form. Like I said before, unusual is the word. With your help, Bob can then use their bodies, their weapons, or even their bare hands to strangle, cripple, impale, and incinerate the cities of sinners sent to stop you from finding Satan himself. What you can expect from Messiah are superlative graphics and compulsive gameplay. Shiny didn't spend so many years working on this title just to bring us indistinct visuals and 'action slacks', and it shows. Faktur City, the godforsaken place which Bob is charged with cleaning up, is an arresting sight in itself, and the action and puzzle-solving will have you engrossed for hours.

Black MirrorPoint and click games are a bit of dying breed in the early noughties, so it's always nice to learn of the existence of titles such as The Black Mirror - a dark, horror-themed adventure from Czech devco Future Games. Already well received in its native eastern European territory, as well as on US shores, the game has now been snapped up by GMX for a full European release. The story tells of Britis...
The Operative: No One Lives ForeverSome people have always maintained that the seventies would come back into fashion, but they never suspected that it would do so in the form of a video game. After Austin Powers, it seems that the age of brightly-coloured furniture and clothing is making a major come back. But for PC, it will remain in the artificial world that is “No One Lives For Ever”, a retro themed game for the mi...
Uru: The Path of the ShellThe Myst collection of video games is one that is renowned on the PC platform. The long running series spanned four fully-fledged adventures before Uru came along. Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, despite the detached title, was faithful to its predecessors, with players embarking on a brand new adventure as Yeesha in a visually stunning game world littered with new and familiar puzzles. And the third of th...
Shellshock: 'Nam '67The subject of war is a frequent occurence in the none-too-shy world of video games. Not afraid to impact upon players willy-nilly with massacres and bloody stories of real life historical events, the industry has brought us some of the most intensive, realistic and immersive games. And next in the pipeline is a shocking warfare adventure from Eidos named Shellshock Nam '67. Clearly based on the e...
AquariumManagement games were previously mostly populated by city sims, theme park sims and sports sims, but now the genre is becoming a little more diverse. For some reason, Hasbro Interactive saw fit to produce a sea-life simulator, giving the players the opportunity to build and manage their very own sea-life centre. After choosing a location to set up your centre, you will begin the game in an empty b...
Quake III ArenaWhen the first details of id Software's new first person shooter, Quake 3 Arena emerged, not everyone was impressed. The previous games from the team had all followed some kind of story line, with a multi-player sub game thrown in for good measure and this was considered the done thing. Announcing that Quake 3 would be an entirely multi-player only affair seemed like a bit of a cop out. There were...
