Evil Dead: Hail to the King, Desktop Computer
In 2001, after lying dormant in the basements of thousands of video rental shops for almost twenty years, the Evil Dead franchise has risen once again, this time on PC. Now it's here to haunt and terrify the game playing public. Subtitled Hail to the King, the new Evil Dead game gives the survival horror genre a whole new meaning. Due for release across several platforms, the PC version is evidently one of the better-looking ports, thanks to the high-resolution visuals afforded by a computer monitor. Although developed in a 2D environment, featuring classic back drops similar to the Resident Evil series, the polygonal characters, demons and monsters look stunningly realistic and somewhat frightening. The environments you wander around are typically dark and eerie, subjecting the player to plenty of unpleasant surprises. Shortly after taking control of the lead character, Ash (played by none other than Bruce Campbell himself), screaming ghost-like creatures soon make an appearance and are quite startling. The further you get into the game, the more populated the stages become, often forcing you to retreat as opposed to attack. There are twenty sinister creatures in total to obliterate. Thankfully, the game allows the player to carry two different weapons simultaneously (the chainsaw being the most popular), making the tasks at hand a little easier. If you're especially lucky, you can use the speech command of the game to scare away these sinister beings. Although Evil Dead: Hail to the King is not highly innovative, the game's ability to create a tense and atmospheric environment keeps the player reluctantly glued to the screen. Now that's addiction.
