The trick to making a good game often lies in the subject at hand. Most players would agree that repetition within a game, no matter how great the game may be, is an unwanted attribute. Now, there are many real-time strategy games (RTS) that consist mainly of killing everything that moves. Such games are great for a short time, but act as something of a self-deterrent after prolonged play. Alter Interactive has taken steps to avoid this trap with the production of Original War for PC. First of all, Original War has been developed in a non-linear fashion. The game story is not a pre-programmed event for the most part, and features branching plot lines. Original War also manages, with success, to mix two very distinct genres, RTS and role-playing, into its gameplay. Each and every one of your animated solders has a unique face and name, as well as abilities that can be improved as you progress. Perhaps the most valuable assets to Original War are the campaign mode missions. There are a few missions that entail blowing the heads off the enemy, yes, but most incorporate a more strategic approach. For example, there is a level in which you must retrieve an enemy scientist (alive) and retreat to your base without getting caught. Also, when out on a mission, survival becomes much harder and resources must be found, put to good use and rationed. To build a new tank, for example, you must first find the resources necessary before increasing your domination in the game. When all these features are combined they create what is evidently an excellent RTS game that is worth its weight in gold to fans of the genre.
