Insane, Desktop Computer
It has been quite some time since the racing genre received a new slant on gameplay. Although the likes of Gran Turismo have proved to be the best in their league, it was only a matter of time before racing fans cried out for something new. Insane, from Codemasters (creators of the Colin McRae series) looks as though it's going to give gamers what they want. Leaving the linear path of the racing genre behind, Insane brings the mayhem of off-road challenges to a new level. Challenges take place across vast landscapes in many locations across the globe, including Utah State, Algeria and, a little closer to home, Ireland. Once the race has begun, it's up to you to reach a specified checkpoint before any of the other drivers. Checkpoints are in fixed locations within the given landscape, but can also be in the most awkward to reach places. Once a checkpoint has been reached by any driver, a new checkpoint will become the target. The first player to beat the other drivers to five checkpoints is the winner. Some of the more influential variables of the game include the landscapes. Drive too slow, and you won't make it up a hill; drive too fast, and you may find yourself plummeting down the face of a 200ft cliff. Be aware of car damage, it can lose you the battle. For such a simple game, there is a lot to do here, with many of Insane's features remaining locked until certain requirements are fulfilled. If you think you're up to the challenge, you're insane, and well qualified to play this game.

Quake IVYou'll probably not have heard of a game called Quake. A long time ago, a company called id. Brought out a game called Quake, in which you single-handedly had to defeat wave upon wave of zombies and demon, whilst armed with nail guns, rocket launchers and the like. The game picked up where id's own Doom had left off, further expanding the newborn first person shooter genre. Then Quake II came out,...
NBA Live 06It's about this time of year that EA like to release all the sporting titles they've been crafting during the off season. Both types of football - Madden and FIFA - have already hit the streets, as has their NHL game which looks as reinvigorated as the hockey league itself does after missing last season. If you've been waiting patiently for the new NBA Live game, well...here it is, and as usual it...
MashedAs your grandparents would say, They don't make 'em like they used to. Certainly true in the world of video games, this is generally a good thing, but it also means that we are now seeing a lot less of a good number of old school-style, gameplay-driven games. The multiplayer-based, top-down racer, popularised by the likes of Micro Machines over 10 years ago, is one of them, and it seems that someo...
Immortal Cities: Children of the NileImmortal Cities: Children of the Nile is the latest take on the city-building strategy genre from Tilted Mill and, as suggested by the title, set in Old Egypt. Given that the development team was founded by the people behind Pharoah and Caesar, it's no surprise to see them further exploring the whole ancient urban planning theme. And in keeping with this tradition of historical geography, Immortal...
