Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Desktop Computer
Being the crme-de-la-crme of top down RPGs, Baldur's Gate made a colossal impact on the PC gaming world. Though not revolutionary in setting, style or control, the detailing and lateral thinking heart of the game, beat strongly in the chest of its players. Carrying the legendary Dungeons & Dragons license, Baldur's Gate has managed to outweigh even this mighty providence, with a massive hardcore following. Just search for it in any search-engine and the amount of fan pages you will find is staggering. Your initial impression when starting up Baldur's Gate 2 is that it is a lot darker than its predecessor. Now please understand, I'm not talking about a lack of light here. There is a sinister and unsettling feel to the game, which stands in contrast to the original. Baldur's Gate was simple: People were either good or evil. In Baldur's Gate 2, evil has been given a perverse twist, which richly feeds the atmosphere with depth and suspense. You will witness scenes of sadistic torture from the outset, which, as you will find out, set the tone of the game. On a graphical level Baldur's Gate 2 is a huge step forward. The detailing and interactivity have been massively souped up, an achievement that really has to be seen to be believed. The story picks up from where it left off. You will find you have been captured and imprisoned with some of your fellow adventurers. If you played the original you will be pleased to see Minsc and Boo from the outset. You must escape to Amn and travel to Athkatla to unravel secrets of being the son of the God of Murder. Baldur's Gate 2 possesses that all-too-rare quality: It is a genuine labour of love. The staff have obviously put every possible effort into its construction, cutting no corners.
