FIFA titles have been coming at us for a fair few years now, and have differed wildly in quality. After a couple of letdowns in the past year or two, FIFA 2001 looks set to redress the balance somewhat. Someone at Electronic Arts has obviously been working late, making all kinds of graphical and game-play tweaks. Whoever it is, they deserve a pat on the back. Right from the start, you can tell you're in for a game that's much improved on its predecessors. The in-depth but easy to navigate menus that are EA's trademark are still in evidence, for those who simply must make their own adjustments, and there are club teams from all over the world as well as a major international representation. And then there are the visuals. As Tina Turner would probably broadcast over the tannoy before kick-off, they are quite simply the best. The way the shadow of the stadia fall upon the turf on a sunny day really is very impressive. The players are near works of art too, especially the Italians of course, motion-captured from some of the best-known footballers on the planet. FIFA 2001 is a handsome devil of a game alright, despite the picture of ginger wizard Paul Scholes on the cover. It's sheer playability guarantees longevity, and the number of teams and game management options available will surely give many fans a reason to go to bed late.
