Heaven and Hell, Desktop Computer
Another peculiar strategy game from CDV, Heaven and Hell pits players as omnipotent gods responsible for swaying the lifestyles of your smaller sibling experiments. An aptly named title, players can assume the role of either a god from the heavens or a devil from the gaping chasms of hell. Heaven and Hell is a game in which players' decisions no matter how small, affect the wellbeing of the game's citizens. Where most strategy games entail players creating a race of their own, this game takes the unusual stance of allowing its players to manipulate an already existing race for better or worse. You will control some very fundamental aspects of living, but you can also choose to influence your people through miracles and catastrophes such as angels, rainbows, demons, lightning, earthquakes, floods and plagues. A happy race is prosperous race, but it's entirely up to you which approach you take. The game itself is surprisingly simple, and although there are a large amount of menus and options, they are easy to navigate. Players with experience of the genre will have no trouble at all familiarising themselves with the game mechanics, but for newcomers there is a very useful spoken tutorial explaining in detail how the game works. The game world itself looks incredible and is a fine blend of 3D environments and 2D animations - it looks seamless. Each of the gaming locales is vibrant and detailed and reminds us why RTS gaming is so well suited to the PC platform. Complete with single player campaigns, random mission generator and 8-player multi-player, Heaven and Hell is a great addition to the bulging RTS genre.
