Combat Aces, Desktop Computer
Microsoft's amazing Combat Flight Simulator 2, released in 2000, has remained the foundation for many expansions and add-ons. Just Flight, a major Flight Sim developer, is continuing to expand its portfolio of expansions with the release of the highly anticipated Combat Aces. As an expansion, Combat Aces does require the Microsoft original to be played, but the result is rewarding. To begin with, Combat Aces includes 20 authentic aircraft from the World War I period. There are also 70 super-sized missions to participate in, covering six game campaigns. It is here where the longevity of this expansion lies. Players can choose to fly many famous WWI planes, including the Fokker Triplane and the Zeppelin Staaken Bomber. Each craft has been accurately modelled and comes with a highly detailed and true-to-life control panel. The handling of each plane is unique and the controls are remarkable, thanks to some great game mechanics and physics. Although a mouse and keyboard will suffice for this game, a professional controller improves the experience considerably. Six airfields, complete with hangars and miscellaneous objects, as well as a high polygon count, help to improve on the already realistic setting of the game. Combat Aces has been labelled the definitive WWI expansion pack, and there's nothing here to suggest otherwise. It looks beautiful, it handles superbly and the attention to detail is astonishing. A powerful PC is recommended.
