Gamers who love tinkering with little virtual societies can rejoice again, as JoWood's greatest God game, Cultures, is back for a second innings. It's called Cultures 2 and it claims to be the cream of the crop in the 'God Sim' field. Is it really that good? Driven by a deep, compelling story line, your role within Cultures 2 is to complete a party of heroes, rediscover the lost parts of the key to the gate of Valhalla and defeat the world's evil once and for all. Okay, it's not overly original, but as far as God Sims go, it's fantastic. The game itself spans across some 11 main missions and a plethora of involving sub-quests. But the design of the game means players aren't restricted to simply completing one stage to reach the next. Gameplay is non-linear, and gives players an exceptional amount of freedom. Building an entire civilisation from scratch to satisfy a greater objective is no easy task. You must carefully choose a settling ground and begin your quest for life. You must learn to utilise and manage resources such as wood, water and game, in order to build a thriving community. The newly improved Cultures AI does help to a noticeable degree, but for the most part, you are the one responsible for their survival. Neglect any of them, and you'll suffer the consequences. Cultures 2 is a great challenge, and one that should be embraced not only by 'God Sim' enthusiasts, but by anyone who knows a good game when they see one.
