A far cry from the strategy and management sims the Swiss company usually churns out, JoWood has published a brand new racing game. It's called King of the Road, and to put it simply, you get to drive some of the biggest, most reputable trucks on the planet. Now that's gotta be fun! Okay, we lied. No JoWood game would be complete without at least a small element of strategy. You're the driver, you've got the cargo, and if you don't get it to the customers on time, you ain't gonna get paid. Your job is to get a truckload of goods from A to B in the shortest time possible, without breaking the law. Unfortunately, if you want the best times, you're gonna have to step on the wrong side of the law. If you prefer to consider yourself wanted, you must learn the art of evasion. Get caught, and you've blown it. It's hardly ethical, but fun nonetheless. Needless to say, King of the Road is far easier with a trusty controller. Playing with a keyboard is futile exercise and a nightmare, so don't even bother trying. There are 20 mean machines to take control of initially. Each one handles slightly different from the next, but it doesn't make a great impact on the way the game is played. Each truck is fully upgradeable; the faster and more powerful your truck is, the more challenging the game becomes, ensuring you're always kept on your toes. With a series of hidden vehicles, hundreds of kilometres of racing area, realistic weather cycles, and all of the above, King of the Road is a good meaty racing game that holds a lot of entertainment value.

Chicago 1930You really can't beat the chance to virtually live a life of organised crime, and, to be perfectly honest, there aren't enough games offering this at the moment. We're still anxiously awaiting a Sopranos-based RPG but, for the time being, developers seem to be concentrating on the 1930s American underworld. The Gathering's Mafia recently did this with a GTA-style action adventure but, for the more...
