You know Tim Schafer. The zany fellow has been responsible for some of the highlights of videogame history, most notably in the adventure genre. Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango all spring readily to mind, and that's precisely the subject of his newest project: the mind. The Psychonauts, you see, are an organisation that specialise in solving the problems posed by people's brains. But they often attack the trouble at its root - by actually exploring the minds of the disturbed patient, literally. At least, that's the special skill of new Psychonauts recruit Raz, short for Rasputin, who comes to the international Psy-spy training camp. His arrival coincides with a series of abductions of students at the boot camp for their gifted brains. But is it a huge mutant lungfish from the nearby lake that has developed a taste for grey matter? Or is there something more sinister at work? Meet a whole host of extraordinary characters and guide Raz through thirteen levels in this 3rd person action adventure. 3 levels take place in the real world, and the rest take place in the darkest recesses of peoples' brains. Beautifully bizarre environments are there to explore, filled with tightropes, trapezes, ladders and other adventure playground style apparatus. Raz's abilities are no less inventive, and he can use thought bubbles as an improvised skateboard, shield or hot air balloon. Gameplay is a mix of non-linear, long term objectives, and puzzles that cleverly tailor themselves to the ability of the player. There are plenty of sub-plots and other tangents to go off at, and plenty of psychic abilities to learn, like clairvoyance, pyrokinesis, telekinesis and invisibility. Psychonauts is unique, creative, colourful and very humorous. We could use more games like this.

Railroad Tycoon 3'Railroad Tycoon'. Those two words simply ooze excitement, joy and anticipation. In much the same way as, say, 'Party Election Broadcast', 'Antique Fair' and, er, 'Trouser Press'. In actual fact, those two words are rather misleading, as behind the literary veil that promises suicide-inducing boredom, lies a very intricate and involving strategy game. There's a lot more to managing a railway than ...
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? 2nd EditionSo who wants to be a Millionaire? It's hard to comprehend the success that the television show and the videogame have achieved on a global basis. Many people enjoy playing along with the show, shouting answers at the TV and sharing the tension. This game all...
Wildlife ParkThe player must build a Wildlife Park from the ground up, continually tweaking it so that the little giggling visitors will happily spend their money. He starts out with only the park area, a ticket booth and a decent amount of money. From there the player has to buy some attractive animals, build their surroundings, add a few employees and then open the gates and let the visitors flow in. The gam...
Stronghold CrusaderOne of Take 2's biggest PC games of 2001, Stronghold, quickly climbed the ranks of RTS fame, and while it didn't strictly belong to the genre, it soon became a much loved title among many hardcore RTS followers. Well, it's another year and it's time for another Stronghold. It's not an add-on and it's not a sequel, it's Stronghold Crusader. Crusader, officially a strategy game and not an RTS, combi...
PerimeterThis real-time strategy title, originating from Russia, introduces a number of new gameplay elements to the usual resource management/combat concept of the popular genre, which consequently offer new challenges to both the game's single and multiplayer modes. Chiefly is the concept of terraforming, which is a key element throughout the game that sees you restructuring the landscape in order to mak...
Desperados: Wanted Dead or AliveStrategy games have been known to cover many themes in the past. These games have been based in space and medieval environments to name but a few. Set in New Mexico after the World War Sessions, the Twinnings & Co Railroad Company continues to b...
