Gothic II, Desktop Computer
Gothic was one of German developer Piranha Bytes' biggest projects of 2001. It was a heavy duty RPG that covered every aspect of exploration and magic in one fell swoop. Two years on, the company has released the sequel, imaginatively titled Gothic II, and it's even more extensive than its predecessor. Taking place in the mining valley of Khorinis, Gothic II tells a tale of slavery and civil war that brings about evil and impending doom to the human race, and no one can stop it. Can they? It is here where you assume control of yet another unwitting protagonist as you embark upon a 3D adventure littered with the usual slew of wizardry and weapons. But how does it compare against its predecessor? Gothic II is played in the third person, in a style similar to that seen in Tomb Raider or most 3D platform games. The game world has been developed completely in 3D and from their starting point, players must gather clues, fight myriad beasts and explore deeper into the depths of this epic RPG. The features of Gothic II are far more extensive than those in the first game. To begin with, the valley of Khoriris plays host to an astonishing 400 non-playable characters (NPCs). Players must interact with such characters frequently if they are to solve the mysteries of Gothic II and progress deeper into the game. There are also 50 devastating magic spells to master - some are well known and easy to learn, whilst others are more obscure but have amazing potential in battle. With three character classes to choose from, the potential for replayability in Gothic II is great. A deep, enjoyable playing experience, Gothic II will take many hours to complete, and we say that's real value for money.
