Midnight Nowhere, Desktop Computer
Survival Horror. It's a phrase most of us have become very familiar with over the past ten years, and a video game genre we've all come to know and love. More recent versions of Alone in the Dark and the appearance of Capcom's schlock horror Resident Evil brought about its mainstream popularity. And ever since then, developers have spent years following suit, hoping to grab a slice of the survival horror pie. Next on the list is Oxygen's Midnight Nowhere for PC. In a town that has fallen victim to a mysterious and brutal serial killer, people are panic-stricken, trying to defend themselves and even make an escape. Police are bending over backwards to catch the criminal, and the military are putting cordons round the town... but nothing can stop the maniac. New people are found dead every day. It's at this point that you wake up and find yourself in a mortuary. The room is a mess. Dead bodies lie scattered all around you and you have no recollection of preceding events or why you're there. Your survival horror begins here... It sounds very much like a typical Resident Evil outing, and in all honesty, it is. But it's a winning formula, and as a game in its own right, Midnight Nowhere is incredibly atmospheric and immersive, thanks to an eerie soundtrack and some very dark gaming locales. As you progress through the horror, equipping yourself with items for your inventory and weapons for defense, you'll often find yourself under heavy attack from a number of creatures of the dark. But combat is relatively simple, and this play mechanic shouldn't pose too much of a problem. The other aspect of the adventure comes in the form of puzzle solving. Puzzles are frequent here, and solving them is usually your only means to reach the next stage of the game. Keep your wits about you. Midnight Nowhere is a scary game at the best of times, and at its worst, it's downright terrifying. Be afraid... be very afraid.
