It's surprising that this historical era has remained so neglected within gaming. After all, Scotland has quite an action-packed heritage to speak of - anyone who has seen Braveheart will be able to attest to that. But then again, who would want to take control of a kilt-donning, sporran-clad, ginger Russ Abbott in any of their skirmishes? Well, anyone who has taken that point of view just may be wrong, as Highland Warriors delivers more than enough intense RTS battle action, with a story that spans Scotland's conflict-ridden history. And not a has-been B-list comedian in sight. As the background to the story dictates: In 843 AD, the first Scottish King Kenneth McAlpin unites the Pict and Scot empires to become the Kingdom of Alba. 400 years later, Edward I, also known as the 'Hammer of the Scots', engulfed the land in a great feud. It was not long before Edward I controlled most of Scotland. The Scots, led by William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, are left to fight what seems to be a futile war for freedom. This is the time when legends are born... The game incorporates a total of four campaigns (spread across 35 missions), each representing a different group and time period in Scottish history: Mystique Clan, Merchant Clan, Highlanders and the English. As you may expect, each of the campaigns offers unique, individual units, knowledge, skills and strengths, such as economy, diplomacy or military. Additionally, the numerous different battle units throughout the game feature various upgrades, special abilities and experience points that make up part of a level-up system. Ultimately, there isn't much to be found in Highland Warriors that hasn't already been done in any number of similar RTS games. But the old adage, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' belongs to this particular genre a great deal more than most. This game does just that, introducing a new scenario into the mix along the way.
