Galactic Civilizations, Desktop Computer
Strategy games these days are pretty serious stuff, especially ones on such a grand scale as this latest space-based RTS from developer Stardock. Galactic Civilizations designates players as the leader of human civilisation and places them in control of humanity's destiny at the dawn of the 23rd Century. As the story goes, a new age of interstellar travel is dawning, and humans and five other civilisations are vying for control of the galaxy. Our home planet is now known as United Earth - you are in charge and, as such, must lead us to victory in true RTS fashion - by researching new technologies, building an economy and creating a powerful military force, while carefully balancing your political, diplomatic and trade skills. Other key objectives in the quest for galactic power see you colonizing and defending planets, building social improvements and fleets, winning elections and, of course, fighting wars. The ultimate goal can be achieved in a number of different ways - by all the races becoming united in a galactic alliance; by someone researching technology that takes them beyond mortality; or, in the usual method, by conquering all opposition with sheer military might. One particular interesting feature of Galactic Civilizations is the 'Metaverse' system. By default, the game is a turn-based single player game, but going online and logging onto Stardock.net enables you to play as part of a Metaverse, where victories, defeats and campaigns can be recorded. Galactic Civilizations is quite an all-encompassing experience. The sheer size and depth mean that there's also plenty of replay value.

Warcraft III: Reign Of ChaosThe transformation of the Orcs' society is one of the core themes of Warcraft III. Traditionally, Orcs are brutal, depraved creatures who serve only to cause strife and chaos amongst other 'enlightened' societies. However, Warcraft III will show that the Orcs not only came from a noble, highly spiritual culture, but that they are actively returning to it. Essentially, the Orcs once cultivated a qu...
Unreal TournamentHead Shot, Double Kill, Killing Spree. Welcome to the future of gladiator combat in Unreal Tournament for the PC. Many people agree that first-person shooters make for the best action orientated multi-player games, we would have to concur. There is nothing quite like the feeling of reaching the frag (kill) limit first when someone just needs just one more kill as well. Unreal Tournament is one of ...
