Homeworld 2, Desktop Computer
The release of the original Homeworld was one of Sierra's biggest releases of 1999, showcasing spectacular space-based combat with high-end graphics that still look good today. But it's sequel, Homeworld 2, is set to push the benchmark forward another step as players get to grips with a brand new story, an overhauled RTS game engine, and even more stunning visuals. Years after the Higarans reclaimed their Homeworld, there is still no peace. Now a new war, a prophecy, and a deadly new enemy threaten to make your previous journey home a futile exercise. You've reclaimed your world once already, now you must defend it from certain doom in what will probably become one of the greatest futuristic RTS experiences of all time. Games that are based within a stellar environment seem to have a natural ability to look pretty darn good, and it has to be said that Homeworld 2 is no exception. The cloudy backgrounds, littered with distant solar systems and nebulas look gorgeous and emphasise just how detailed the game is. The mothership and its surrounding fleets are lovingly rendered, and although the system specifications for this game are a little steep, it makes all the difference. In the second instalment, you'll be charged with leading an updated fleet through a great deal of story-driven missions, amounting to several dozen hours of gameplay. There are new craft, new abilities, a streamlined interface for ease of use, but most importantly, there's a six-player multi-player game in which fleet competes against fleet in some of the greatest space wars the PC has had the pleasure of hosting. Homeworld 2 is by no means a disappointment; it surpasses its predecessor in nearly every way and is well worth taking the time to play.
