Half-Life 2, Desktop Computer
The sequel to what many regard as the greatest PC game ever opens the doors to a world where your very presence affects everything around you, from the physical environment to the emotions of friends and enemies. As the bespectacled and formerly mild-mannered Gordon Freeman, once again you start out by picking up the crowbar as you go about rescuing the world from the wrong you unwittingly unleashed back in Black Mesa. Earth's population is dwindling, the alien-infested land running short on resources - it's a dirty job, etc., and people are counting on Gordon. The original Half-Life has picked up more than 50 industry awards since it made its debut in 1998, and while its storyline was - on the surface - nothing out of the ordinary, the gameplay certainly was. Encouragingly enough, Half-Life 2's lengthy development time means that you have an equally exhilarating experience to look forward to. All the intensity and high-octane action present in the original has been amped up to the extreme for HL2. Advanced AI of friends and foes has been improved so that they can deal with all kinds of situations, such as mastering tricky terrain, assessing threats, and fashioning weapons from whatever comes to hand. Anyone who saw the footage from this year's E3 cannot fail to have been impressed by the explosive 15 minutes or so of action that unfolded on screen. Well, now it's playable, and if the next instalment takes another six years to materialise, then it should go by in a flash. We reckon that Half-Life 2 will be the game of choice for genre fanatics and that the sheer scale of HL2, its stunning animation and graphics, and highly charged atmospheric gameplay should guarantee its place in the apocryphal Hall of Fame. Developer Valve had better order a new trophy cabinet, while you...you get a Half-Life.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004The coolest man in golf is back for another 18 holes in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004, and he's brought a few of his talented friends with him. Electronic Arts isn't the biggest videogame publisher in the world merely by sales, but by reputation too, and though the company gets a lot of flak for releasing update after update, we have to say that this particular incarnation of the PGA Tour title is wor...
Rayman 3: Hoodlum HavocArms and legs or no arms and legs, our old French buddy is still a hero, and it's time for him to get back into the swing of things. It's been nearly three year since his last outing in The Great Escape, but now he faces a foe more sinister than the pirates of Rayman 2, and even the evil Mr Dark. For the third and perhaps most bizarre outing yet, Rayman's sidekick and best buddy Globox find himsel...
Half-LifeWhen the spin doctors got to work on the press release for Half Life, it was a whirl of 'detailed graphics', 'advanced AI' and 'intriguing storylines'. Of course, experienced gamers would dismiss this as the usual PR BS, but hang on a minute. The title is the only thing about this game that's half-hearted. So don't just take a quick glance at this Quake-em-up. Take more time to appreciate what's g...

Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of UndrentideThe summer 2002 release of Bioware's Neverwinter Nights gave many hardcore PC gamers a much-needed RPG epic amidst the annual summer drought. With 3D environments, tons of spells, weapons and a good narrative to boot, this action-based adventure even rivalled games such as Warcraft 3. It is a fine game in its own right, but with the addition of the Shadows of Undrentide expansion pack, it stands e...
Two ThronesNot, as you may be thinking, some kind of his and hers honeymoon bathroom suite, the Two Thrones in question in this case are those of the English and French monarchies. You see, this game is quite a serious man's RTS, set during a time when noble families in England and France were engaged in an epic war for control of the two thrones of the kingdom. More specifically, the game takes place in the...
