Medal of Honor: Allied Assault Breakthrough, Desktop Computer
The original and - in many folks' opinion - the best WWII shooter is back, so it's time to dust off and re-install your old copy of Allied Assault or maybe just drag yourself off those MOH servers for just enough time to fire up this latest expansion pack. As is normally the case with expansion packs, Breakthrough adds 11 new single-player levels to the game, as well as a host of new multiplayer maps, locations, weapons and soldiers. This time the action is set in the European Theatre of Operations, from 1943-44, with the game casting players as US Army Sergeant John Baker. This particular aspect of the war sees players attempt to stop the Axis powers by striking at the soft underbelly of Europe. Throughout the single-player story, a variety of real battles are recreated, such as Kasserine Pass in North Africa, the capturing of Messina in Sicily, and the final repulsion of the German Army at the historic battle of Monte Battaglia in the heart of Italy. With regard to the multiplayer aspect, a variety of enhancements have been made, not least with the addition of the new Liberation mode. In this mode, defeated players must be rescued by surviving teammates in order to continue the fight. The popular Tug-of-War and Objective modes make a welcome return and players can now take to the wheel (or whatever particular steering/manoeuvring aid) of tanks, call in artillery strikes and request the assistance of minesweepers. Players can also choose from American, British, Italian, and German skins in all multiplayer modes. Maintaining the kind of 'seal of quality' aspect to the series, the developers have continued to work closely with the Medal of Honor Society to ensure that Breakthrough reflects the ideals and integrity of the prestigious Medal of Honor. Regular team consultant and respected technical advisor Captain Dale Dye has again been on hand to ensure authenticity throughout. If you're a Medal of Honor fan then this will more than likely already be on your To Buy list. After all, the prospect of breathing new life into one of your favourite games is definitely an endearing one at that. Breakthrough does exactly that and should most certainly be checked out.
