Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death, Desktop Computer

The first intellectual property to be exploited since Rebellion acquired the rights to all things 2000AD in (conveniently) 2000AD, is Judge Dredd, appearing across all home platforms in this latest first-person shooter, Dredd vs Death. The game remains predominantly the same across the board, except for the fact that this PC version benefits from a more flexible multiplayer element, thanks to the advantage of LAN/Internet gaming. The story behind the game is faithfully reminiscent of the original comic book scenario - it's the 22nd Century, unemployment is endemic, boredom is universal, and only the Judges can prevent total anarchy. In the depths of Mega-City One, a group calling themselves the Death Cult are devising a plan to liberate the evil Dark Judges from their holding chamber in a Justice Department penitentiary. Unsurprisingly, it's yet again up to merciless law enforcer Judge Dredd to put a stop to the impending threat. The game itself takes the form of an entertaining and uncomplicated story-driven shooter, in which players are charged with the task of dealing with an unrelenting mass of attacking adversaries. Thankfully, weaponry is not in short supply and so fierce, non-stop action is assured. Comic fans will be pleased to learn that the game features a host of popular characters, such as the female Psi-Judge Anderson and the malign Dark Judges, and that it takes place across well known locations from the comic strip, including Resyk, the Smokatorium and the Grand Hall of Justice. As mentioned before, this PC version boasts a host of multiplayer options as well as the standard single-player game. As a result, up to 32 players can take part in customisable LAN/Internet games, across 10 challenging multiplayer maps. The various game options include a number of frenetic new game-types that could only exist in the world of Judge Dredd, such as 'Block War' and 'Umpty Raid'. Powering things throughout is Rebellion's own Asura Engine - dubbed as a 'graphic novel renderer' - which has been designed to recreate the look and feel of graphic novels like 2000AD. As a consequence, light and shadow effects play a key part in the game and, subsequently, the visuals remain faithful to their moody pen and ink origins.
