Beyond Divinity, Desktop Computer
In a world saturated with complex PC role-playing games, many fall short of the mark, delivering nothing more than an uninspired and poorly developed adventure. On the other hand, some stand out for their superior visuals and gameplay - one of which is 2002's Divine Divinity. And as with most industry successes, the game has now received a fully-fledged sequel - Beyond Divinity. As a servant of the Divine, pulled into a demonic world and soul forged with a formidable Death Knight, you must together find a way to undo your curse by mastering the ancient art of 'riftrunning' - a skill that allows a universe's prisoners to escape to other realms. It's a thoroughbred fantasy plot, but it's one that makes for a seriously tough RPG, and here's why... A sequel in name only, Beyond Divinity takes a page from the Final Fantasy formula, bringing with it a new world, a new story and a new race, meaning that - Divine Divinity veteran or not - this game is brand new and full of surprises. The original's acclaimed skill system remains intact, and players can achieve numerous levels of mastery, but consequently, gameplay has been made somewhat tougher. Though Beyond Divinity is indeed a mighty challenge, the adventure is still accessible to even the most inexperienced of gamers. There's a streamlined user interface, informative maps, a zoom function, and there are useful items littered all around the hostile new world. Players shouldn't have much trouble learning the basics, but the old 'easy-to-learn, difficult-to-master' play mechanic is one that is repeated here. Beyond Divinity is a gorgeous looking game, with vibrant, detailed and highly interactive visuals and a good soundtrack. As a game, it's an immersive and worthy sequel.
