Magic: The Gathering - Battlegrounds, Desktop Computer
A thoroughbred role-playing experience with a hint of real-time action and split-level gameplay, Atari's Magic: The Gathering - Battlegrounds is inspired by the original 'Magic' card game. Though it resembles something that would be stocked in a Games Workshop outlet, the PC equivalent of the card classic is quite different. To begin with, players must select a duelist who they will then stay with throughout the linear game adventure. Additionally, players must arm their character with two colours of magic - choosing from red, green, white, blue and black. These two choices make a substantial difference to the way the game is played, but however you choose, all players must progress through six extensive chapters in a massive single-player quest. Each of these chapters boasts an additional 15 quests to partake in, making it in one of the largest and most challenging games of its kind. Most quests involve players battling with native sub-bosses and bosses who possess more powerful and potent spells. Defeat your opponent, and you can claim their spells for your own use. And that's largely how the game progresses. But the most significant feature of Battlegrounds is its online capabilities. Joining a massive global community of Battlegrounds players for extended play, gamers are free to download new content, partake in forums, make friends, and even measure their skill on an online leaderboard. Battlegrounds' visuals also deserve a mention, and as the screenshots attest, the game looks absolutely stunning. Both characters and the surrounding environments are vibrant, colourful and deliver that all-important fantasy feel that fans of the genre demand of such a game. Battlegrounds is a popular game for a very good reason. We can only hope to see more from the 'Magic' series in the future.
