Gangland, Desktop Computer
It seems the gaming world is developing quite a penchant for gangster titles lately, what with the recent Mafia, Chicago 1930 and now this latest offering from Whiptail Interactive. Classifying itself as a blend of role-playing and strategy, with a hint of The Sims-type gaming, Gangland offers you the opportunity to get down to business the Sicilian way and take part in a whole host of virtual organised crime. Inspired no doubt by the likes of The Godfather, Goodfellas and the fantastic Sopranos, the game follows a Sicilian mob in modern day America. You take on the role of one of four brothers - Mario, Angelo, Romano, or Sonny - and must work your way up within the family, as well as fight it out for supremacy with other rival gangs amidst the brilliantly titled Paradise City game world (take it away, Axl!). As you progress through the game, you build up your own empire by doing all the favourite gangster things like setting up protection rackets, threatening locals, prostituting women and - where necessary - clipping motherless wise guys, in order to gain respect from both your peers and your family. The AI throughout the game reacts to the way in which you go about playing the game, with an entire city and all its inhabitants going about their daily business around you. Quite impressively, it's possible to interact with every single one of the 800 or so non-playable characters, which live out their own AI-driven lives in each of the game's 26 sections. Gangland also features full support for multiplayer gaming, allowing up to eight players to hook up over a LAN or the Internet and take part in some frantic gang warfare. With a host of maps, the inclusion of plenty of objective-based gameplay, and the promise of a 3D map editor, this looks like a lorra, lorra fun.
