Journey to the Center of the Earth, Desktop Computer
The classic mystery adventure game is one that is largely owned by the creators of the world-renowned Myst series. Many developers have tried to follow suit, but few have managed to match its intrigue and depth. However, there's a new adventure on the cards from GMX, based on a classic story, Journey to the Centre of the Earth. A fantasy game of epic proportions, Journey to the Centre of the Earth tells the tale of young and aspiring photographer Ariane. Flying over a vast volcano on Iceland, her helicopter ride comes to a tragic end when a nasty thermal sends the chopper off balance. She survives the crash, but then falls into the depths of the Earth before waking on a mysterious subterranean beach... your real adventure starts here. It's an old story, but it's still just as gripping as the day it was first told. The game itself, like most offerings of this type, is a thoroughbred explore-em-up in which players assume the role of the intrepid photographer in a mission to uncover Earth's greatest secrets. You'll be charged with solving dozens of puzzles, and you'll interact with hundreds of objects and characters in a game that has a branching storyline and two possible endings. The feeling and atmosphere of the game is quite unique, and the addition of a stirring musical score makes it all the more engrossing. Visually, Journey to the Centre of the Earth is a delight. Though the environments themselves are generally pre-rendered, they are beautifully detailed and come presented in high resolution. The characters themselves are shown in real-time 3D and are again detailed and convincing. Journey to the Centre of the Earth might not end up as popular as the Gran Turismos and Final Fantasies of this world, but it's a good, compelling adventure fans of the genre will devour.
