Cricket 2004, Desktop Computer
Besides mainstream genres such as football games, beat-em-ups and racers, the video games industry also plays host to some lesser-known genres in to accommodate smaller groups of gamers. And one such genre is the cricket simulator - a game that few developers have bothered to take look at. However, Electronic Arts has had notable success with its official Cricket series, and the game has received its 2004 update for PC. One of only a handful of cricket sims available, EA's latest and greatest offering, Cricket 2004, simply pits players as their favourite international team in a game of virtual cricket that has taken some 18 months to develop. It's a game that probably won't appeal to the mainstream, but to the sport's hardcore fanbase, it's something well worth strapping on the pads for. Cricket 2004 is filled with the usual techno-babble that only followers of the sport will understand, but once players become accustomed to how the game works they'll start to appreciate the intricacies and balanced gameplay of Cricket 2004. The game structure itself is very much like most EA Sports offerings, in that players are able to choose from a list of international teams and players that cover Asia, Australia, South Africa and Great Britain. There's also a plethora of accurately modelled stadia, character likenesses, motion-captured animation, commentary and real-time weather effects. This set of standard but comprehensive features is becoming a trend in EA Sports games, but its entirely welcome and we'll no doubt see more from the Cricket franchise in the coming years.
