Doom Collector's Edition, Desktop Computer

With not much time to go (fingers crossed!) until the release of the ever-so-eagerly-anticipated Doom III, it seems Activision and id have seen fit to remind us all where it all started and pave the way for the good things to come. Doom Collector's Edition is indeed an edition for the collectors amongst you, offering the previous three instalments of the renowned series all in one handy little package. You know the score with Doom - the game that more or less defined the first-person shooter genre as we know it today. No pretensions, just quick-fire shoot-em-up action in which you take on the role of a space marine armed to the teeth and charged with the task of laying waste to a host of grisly hell-spawn. There are 27 gruesome levels to work through, in which you must face off against the likes of cyber-organic mongrels, stampeding demons and ruthless undead marines. The sequel, Doom II, delivers pretty much more of the same, albeit with the usual array of additions, updates and new features. This time the forces of the netherworld have overrun Earth, leaving billions dead and you with the task of saving humanity (again) by descending into the depths of hell itself. The game offers nearly twice as many death-wielding demons as its predecessor, as well as more levels, a powerful new weapon, and support for four-way multiplayer action over a LAN. The rather misguidingly-titled Final Doom plunges you once more into the claustrophobic, acid-drenched hallways riddled with hell-spawned hordes. There are more chain gun zombies, hell knights and zombies than ever before, as well as a total of 64 new levels to undertake. Doom Collector's Edition also comes bundled with some preview content for the upcoming super-sequel, just to whet your appetite even more. At less than a tenner it's a well worthy investment into a bit of FPS heritage.
