Are Wild West games the new World War II games? We're all for a trend allowing us to live out our childhood dreams as gunslingers in the untamed west. And we've now seen two such efforts in as many months, with October 2005 seeing the release of Darkwatch, a cowboy sim with added vampires. Now Activision has its own outlaw offering, and the good news is it's developed by Tony Hawk people Neversoft, and written by a proper Hollywood screenwriter, Randall Jahnson, the pen behind The Mask of Zorro's sword. Gun follows the adventures of Colton White. Poor old Colton pays the price for living on the wild frontier by losing everything he once held dear. And having done so, he does whatever anyone else would do in a land chock full of guns and horses - he goes on a rampage in search of the outlaws who need to be taught a lesson. There'll be plenty of 'reckons', 'd'you hears' and 'Yee-hahs' as you take to your trusty steed and roam the great American wilderness, a sprawling and varied environment full of canyons, mountains, plains, forests, goldmines and towns, each with its own saloon for drinking, gambling and fighting. With access to six-shooters, shotguns, gatling guns, arrows, hatchets and explosives, you undertake a mission-based quest to rid the west of all types of scum. Be they cattle rustlers, deputies or the dreaded 'Injuns', nobody is safe from the vengeful trigger finger of Colton White. Hang around with whores, play poker, or get up to more energetic activities like robbing trains, collecting bounties and murdering buffalo, a-stealthing and a-shooting as a-appropriate. You may be too old to dress up as a cowboy these days, but that doesn't mean you can't savour the taste of the west, and - if you like - try to win it.

Cossacks II: Napoleonic WarsCDV's Cossacks: European Wars was a RTS game set in the Europe of the 17th and 18th centuries. Players could choose one of several European nations and expand their empires across the continent. Two further expansion packs were released, adding two new nations and larger game maps each time, and all three were finally re-released in a collector's edition in 2003. The isometrically-angled game feat...
Age Of Empires Gold EditionOriginally released back in 1997, Age of Empires proved to be quite a success. Enough so, that the expansion pack, Rise of the Romans, was to be placed alongside it. A year later and the two games were to be bundled in the ultimate strategy package, Age of Empires Gold Edition. In the gold edition, use can now utilise the features of both the original and the expansion pack on one CD, and at no ex...

Medieval: Total War follows in its wake, and will quickly establish itself as the best in the series. The Sims 2: UniversityThough they didn't perhaps realise it at first, when Electronic Arts released the first Sims game it was the birth of a world-beating IP. A slew of expansion packs consolidated the game's position as the biggest selling computer game of all time, and people who didn't even consider themselves gamers were soon looking after their Sims, making friends with other Sims, and building and decorating the...
Sky Sports Football ManagerMen like football. Men who are managed and men who manage will surely like football management. Not many get to do the real thing, so they turn to games like this one. So what makes this new entrant to the genre worthwhile? How comprehensive and accomplished these games are is entirely dependent upon the producers. In the case of Sky Sports Football Manager, there is nothing more polished than thi...
TOCA Race Driver 2: The Ultimate Racing SimulatorThe sequel to Toca Race Driver's most obvious selling point is its multitude of motorsports. There's everything on four wheels that we can think of here, apart from soapbox racers, and there's a different way to race every type. Piloting a super-fast GT Lights and lumbering around Kyalami in a huge truck is not the same game, but they're both here. Be prepared for one or two failures as you get to...
