18 Wheeler American Pro Trucker, Electronic Games
Sega's massively original arcade game 18-Wheeler has made the console leap onto the Dreamcast. As the name suggests, this a game that features the massive lorries that make the trans-continental trip from one end of America to the other. You are in the driving seat in one of the craziest races you are ever likely to compete in. In 18 Wheeler, you are racing your rival from New York to Key West (Florida) to Dallas, Las Vegas and finally ending in San Francisco. That's over 5,000 miles of truck racing though some of the most beautiful scenery that the States has to offer. Racing Trucks definitely has its advantages, when you're in a 10 tonne beast driving along at speeds of over 100mph, other drivers get out of your way. Because if they don't, you can give them a friendly little nudge to show them who's boss. Occasionally there are bonus vans that if you run into, reward you with 5 seconds of bonus time. Not only are you racing against your rival, avoiding traffic, but you also have the clock to contend with. The time limit is strict and you have to keep your foot down if you are going to make that checkpoint. If only your trucking life was that simple, to add to the pressure of coming first and making the time limit extensions you also have the hazardous temperamental weather systems of America to contend with. Watch out for thunderstorms and tornadoes. Your rival will always try to ram into you, cut you up and will take every shortcut he can to win the race. Additionally, along your route there are parking sub-games to test your reversing skills. If are succeed at these you will be rewarded with power-ups such as a new engine. One small problem with the game is the actual length of 18-Wheeler. It's arcade roots are obvious, it's visually impressive, gimmicky and fun, but the game will be over all too quick. The replayability factor is increased by multiple routes and additional sub games and game modes, but you might want to rent this game before buying it.

PC's had the power to move things on a step or two, but the PC gaming audience is not a beat 'em up loving audience. So we had to wait for the power of the Dreamcast to bring the latest and...
