The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Electronic Games

Developed by Seattle-based Surreal Software, The Fellowship of the Ring is one of 2002's most anticipated movie-based games. Released for the Xbox powerhouse, this epic adventure game follows three members of the Fellowship as they discover the fantasy and wonders of Middle Earth. Players relive the experiences of Frodo, Aragorn and Gandalf as they journey from the peaceful lands of the Shire through the darkness of Moria to the River Anduin. On their quest to protect the One Ring from the Dark Lord Sauron, players will explore the massive environments of Middle Earth whilst solving puzzles and fighting enemies such as Orcs, Black Riders and an evil Balrog. Fellowship of the Ring is very much an adventure title, similar in vein to Nintendo's Legend of Zelda, and features several role-playing elements. But there's nothing too overwhelming, and it's not Final Fantasy hardcore by any means. There are dozens of non-playable characters and there's plenty of extensive dialogue, but because the game has such a potent story, it works extremely well. The Fellowship of the Ring makes good use of the Xbox hardware and successfully recreates the atmosphere of one of the most immersive, intricate and compelling tales ever told. Delivering gorgeous visuals, stunning voice acting and a carefully designed game engine, Surreal's latest effort is well worth the wait.
