Following the hordes of epic combat games already available on PC, Xbox's Battle Engine Aquila pits players against an onslaught of rival mechanical beasts in a future fight for survival. When a sudden climatic change triggers a global crisis, most of the land is claimed by the worlds ever-rising oceans. With too many people and too little land to go around, an epic battle ensues to claim what is left of the drowned planet. Immersed in a series of increasingly frantic missions, you assume the role of Hawk, the pilot of the much-vaunted prototype Battle Engine, codenamed Aquila. The Battle Engine Aquila world consists of a series of islands that are the result of devastating climatic change brought on by centuries of atmospheric pollution. People need this land, and conflict is inevitable. Each encounter takes place upon a vast battlefield, with war raging between two feuding sides - the Forseti and the Muspell. This is a major war, with thousands of units engaged on each side, ranging from infantry to tanks, planes, battleships and artillery. Largely, Battle Engine Aquila is simply a case of targeting giant metal objects and destroying them with whatever ammo you have at your disposal - a shoot-em-up, then. But of course, strategy plays its part once more - positioning and minimal use of weapons will help you no end in this deadly environment. Shoot or be shot, just don't be careless. The game world itself looks great, it has to be said. Environments are vast, futuristic, yet completely believable, the onscreen mechs and troops are well animated and there are some beautifully rendered explosions. It's is just a game, but a gorgeous and playable one at that.
