Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2, Electronic Games

The Tony Hawk-on-a-BMX series makes a welcome return to the big three consoles and, as you'd expect, is bigger, better, and a host more other adjectives. The Xbox version, as is increasingly the case with multi-platform releases, has also received a couple of exclusive features, namely, an extra rider and a bonus level. The premise of the game sees the player take a road trip across America with a team of real life BMX professionals. For those of you enlightened as to BMX's big players, the featured cast includes such riders as Mike Escamilla, Joe Kowalski, Cory Nastazio, and, of course, 10-time World Vert Champion Mat Hoffman. Eight free-roaming, fully populated levels (plus one extra on the Xbox, don't forget) feature throughout the game, brought to life with pedestrians, cars, boats and helicopters. The usual aim of riding around the course, pulling off the most radical trick combos (dude!) is still the focal point of the proceedings, but is also accompanied by multiple tiers of objectives. This, along with a non-linear game progression and the presence of FMV between levels goes to somewhat enhance the road trip experience. As well as the Road Trip mode, there's also a Single Session mode and a Free Ride option on offer, as well as a two player, split screen mode that features a plethora of further fun for those of you with friends. A BMX Park Editor further increases the already ample offerings, allowing players to create their own courses with ramps, rails, fun boxes and a variety of other obstacles. With the next instalment of Dave Mirra not out for a while, this title certainly rules the roost for the time being, as far as BMX games are concerned. If it'll fit in, it's more than worthy of a place next to your Xbox.
