This year, 2002, Game Boy Advance owners have been spoilt for choice when it comes to tennis sims. It seems that we can't get enough of 'em. Well according to Microids anyway, because they've brought us another new virtual tennis experience by the name of Tennis Masters 2003. Travelling to the hard courts of Indian Wells, Miami, and Toronto, or visiting the luxurious clay courts of Monte Carlo, Rome and Hamburg, players tour the globe, taking part in the nine faithfully reproduced Masters Series tournaments. The aim, not surprisingly, is to qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai and become the world's number one. An intuitive control system puts four different shots at the player's disposal (top spin, slice, flat and lob) enabling a wealth of moves to be accessed during gameplay. 16 different players are available in all, each with his or her individual skills and style of play. The visual quality of the title is quite impressive, presenting authentic looking courts and characters and making for a realistic look overall. Movement is smooth - over 100 different animations feature throughout, each made up of 15 frames and adapted from the motion capture of the PC version. Considering the wealth of tennis games already available for the GBA, Tennis Masters Series needs to stand out and it does. If realism is what you're after, as opposed to the cartoon-style, Super Tennis idea, then this is worth a look.
