Dark Angel, Sony Playstation
Top Hollywood director James Cameron's TV creation finally makes it to the home console market with the release of Dark Angel for the PlayStation 2. In true 'game of the series' fashion, the game sees players take on the role of foxy protagonist Max in a third-person action/adventure, closely following the plot of the TV show. Max is a genetically enhanced super-soldier with attitude. Kinda groovy, laid back moves (hang on - wrong show). As a child, Max escaped from her military creators, Manticore, along with a handful of her 'siblings', and made a life for herself on the streets of 21st-century Seattle. Haunted by dark memories of her victimisation at the hands of her creators, Max embarks on a quest to reclaim her past and locate her missing siblings. This is where you step in, taking control of Max as she travels across six unique environments and takes on a total of 30 missions that include a variety of objectives and side stories. Along the way a host of familiar friends and foes are encountered, such as cyber journalist Logan Cale, with whom Max joins forces in an attempt to overturn corrupt government movements. One of the key focuses in Dark Angel is its combat system, which combines up-front, intensive hand-to-hand combat with an assortment of evasive and stealth manoeuvres. This allows players to take different approaches to certain situation, by either diving straight into the action or opting for the currently fashionable stealthy method. As well as these, the game's Rage System allows players to unlock up to 50 further faster and more devastating moves as they progress. In the same way as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dark Angel is not the most original of game concepts but it's faithful to the TV series and quite a fun little action romp.
