All Star Baseball 2002, Sony Playstation
In European territories, Acclaim has a healthy reputation as a developer of a wide range of great games, not least sports titles. In the company's homeland of America, they are especially well known for Baseball games. Rarely do games of an American bent reach further than Japan, and when one hits the high street shelves of Britain, it's likely to go pretty much unnoticed. All Star Baseball 2002 is one of these exceptions, and what's more, it's on PlayStation 2. Those of you with more than a modicum of knowledge of the sport will be pleased to hear that all 30 Major League teams and over 700 players have been incorporated into this millennial update. All player features and stadium environments have been replicated with a great level of accuracy and precision, thanks to the PlayStation 2's capabilities. But as a sports game, commentary and audio quality are of great importance and can add a heightened sense of realism to the game. Acclaim has shown it's fully aware of this and has utilised the voices of Bob Brenly and Thom Brennaman. An in-game real-time scoreboard adds a nice touch to All Star Baseball 2002. In terms of gameplay mechanics, this game has a well-developed interface with a 3D batting power/contact swing selection. This feature alone enhances the experience of the game greatly. There are a variety of game modes that include Exhibition, Season, World Series and Batting Practice. The game boasts a wide range of camera angles, engrossing gameplay and a simple control system that is easy to learn but challenging to master. It's a well-balanced game that's been superbly executed. What more could you ask?

ProStroke Golf: World Tour 2007The marketing bumph pushing ProStroke Golf: World Tour 2007 declares that it is this year's only real-life golf simulation. It's more than that, as you soon find out on playing it: it's perhaps the closest that a videogame has ever come to recreating real-life golf. What's more, this faithful video game adaptation of one of the world's most challenging sports makes you actually want to go out and ...
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone ComplexThe first anime film to be simultaneously released in Japan, Britain, and the United States, Ghost in the Shell did rather better on DVD and video sales than it did at the box office. It told the story of a female cyborg cop hunting a dangerous computer hacker called the Puppet Master, and was rendered in arguably the most sensational riot of superb animation, sound and (subtle) CGI ever seen in a...
This Is Football 2003The beautiful game just keeps on getting, well, more beautiful. Sony have finally cracked the football genre with This is Football 2003. Discounting the Psone versions in the series, and passing over TIF 2002 (not bad, but no ISS/Pro Evolution) the 2003 model is pretty much there as far as early 21st century soccer titles go. Sony's near-obsessive quest for football heaven is here, and it's made i...

Grand Theft Auto: San AndreasThe first thing that strikes about this long-awaited title is the sheer size of the game world. It's been mooted that there's over 100 hours of gameplay in San Andreas: looking at the enclosed map and spending a few minutes finding your way around - the screen and the controls, natch - it's entirely believable. Beyond the surface there is such a lot to uncover/discover. Your character, CJ, initial...
WWE SmackDown! Vs. RAW 2006Last year saw the release of the first Smackdown! Vs. Raw. We won't pretend to be privy to the intricate differences between the two established flavours of THQ wrestling games, but it has to be good news that the publisher has taken to squeezing them both onto the same disk. It was certainly a popular move for wrestling game fans, who voted with their wallets and bought more copies of the last ga...
