The shadowy international conglomerate SURMA possesses a highly advanced virus known as the Ice Worm. The Ice Worm can bypass even the most advanced security systems to steal military secrets and weapons research from the west. When their well-planned operation is sabotaged, Ethan Hunt and the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) get involved. They soon discover that the IMF's own ultra-secure database has been hacked. Up against an opponent with access to their deepest secrets, Hunt and the team must track down those behind the sabotage and recover the Ice Worm technology. The game opens in a dimly-lit city square of great proportions. All is quiet, save for the sounds of exploding fireworks in the distance and the occasional footsteps of guards and soldiers. And if you can hear their footsteps, you can be sure that they can hear yours too. Herein lies one of the key elements in Operation Surma' s gameplay; sneaking around stealthily to avoid detection. It's hardly the stuff of gung-ho heroes, but it is essential in games like this. Great emphasis is also placed on the huge range of gadgets and weapons at your disposal. Only by working for the IMF do you get to use such delightfully clever items as masks (remember Tom Cruise's in the MI film from 1996?) the Electronic Warfare Gun (microchip your enemies for tracking down later) and the IMF Contact Lenses - you can now see in the dark! The beginning of the game is just the tip of a very large iceberg. Developer Paradigm has packed so much into Operation Surma, it's mind-bogglingly good value for money. From the sinister environs of eastern Europe to the intense heat of the south-western United States, via hostile African territory, you get to live through it all as Hunt and his team use their superior technology and know-how to retrieve the uber-tech gadgetry that is being used to subvert them. It doesn't feel like the end of the world is nigh as you play Operation Surma, but a lot depends on your actions as you play through the game. It's tough, but so is Ethan Hunt, right?
