Crashed, Sony Playstation
Already available for the Xbox (under the name Crash) this Destruction Derby-style car wrecking sim now graces Sony's Playstation 2. The premise basically revolves around the idea of taking hot rods, muscle cars and performance marques and smashing the pants out of them. Described as a game that runs on pure adrenaline, Crashed gives the player the chance to commandeer highly desirable vehicles, leaving behind a trail of mangled metal and broken glass. With emphasis on a 'simple yet effective' concept, the game utilises a dedicated 3D engine to do a great deal more than previously possible in terms of extensive vehicle deformation. The two core features of Crash are the high detail level of the cars themselves and the damage the player is able to unleash on them. With car models totalling some extensive polygon counts and featuring over 30 detachable parts, a great many possibilities are available for real-time car wrecking. The game itself features both Single and Multi-player modes. Career Mode starts the player with three cars and three regions to play in. Various different challenges must be completed successfully, thus rewarding the player with new areas, challenges and vehicles. Arcade mode allows the player to play in one-off games featuring the cars and levels unlocked in Career Mode. A key focus has been placed on the design of the multi-player aspect of the game, with two players supported across an extensive array of game modes, such as Team Mode, Deathmatch, Multitag, Time Limit and Score Limit. Crash is intended to have as much importance placed on this mode as is placed on the single player game. Altogether, Crashed features 18 individual, customisable game types and challenges, including a dedicated stuntman mode (a somewhat popular concept these days) and novelties such as target and bus jumping. That's quite a lot for your 40 quid.

Gunfighter II: Revenge of Jesse JamesConsidering its perfectly apt subject material, it's surprising there haven't been more shooters based on the Wild West. If television has served us correctly, all cowboys used to do was shoot stuff with big guns (and possibly enjoy a quick smooch with the local lovely lady). So how about reliving such thrills via your PS2? Well now you can with this latest gun game from Ubi Soft, Gunfighter II: R...
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4It's fair to say that the fourth instalment in NeverSoft's seminal skate series brings the least to the table, in terms of innovation, concept and gameplay and yet strangely, it's the best to grace a console since Tony got himself a PA and sold himself to a man named Chad. The long-avoided (or should that be best-avoided) career mode has finally squeezed itself into the impeccable format of the ea...
007 NightFireJames Bond sits happily alongside other videogame characters. It's almost like he's always been around, perhaps making eyes at Lara, whilst planning to dispatch Waluigi with a bolt from his watch and a humorous quip. With the Bond license now residing at Electronic Arts, it's worth bearing in mind that 007 got his feet under the console table with the release of the astoundingly good and entirely ...
Tomb RaiderThe youngest of the versions available, the Playstation Tomb Raider is almost indistinguishable from its elder PC and Saturn siblings. Aside from the slight slow-down when things get REALLY busy, the game moves at a smooth rate with an admirable draw distance. Polygon crunching is minimal, and the whole game plays just as well as the slightly faster Saturn version....
Q*bertThe puzzle genre has had a hard time through its conversion from 2D to 3D, essentially because everything that could be done with the puzzle game was already on the shelves for the 2D platforms of the 8 and 16-bit era. Designers had to come up with something new; something that would employ 3D technology. Q*Bert, an early 3D puzzle creation is among some of the few successes to utilise the new fou...
