Tekken 2 and Soul Blade Twin Pack, Sony Playstation
Namco, one of the most prolific figures in the arcade industry, first made big waves on console when Sony unleashed it's mainstream targeted PlayStation on the world in 1994. Since then we've seen numerous racers and beat-em-ups, and two of the company's best-loved console games - Tekken 2 and Soul Blade - have now been put together in a single affordable package. Building on the massive explosion of beat-em-ups that occurred in the mid-to-late nineties, 1997 saw the release of Soul Blade. It sold well, and although it didn't quite match the potential of the Tekken 2, it proved itself as a fine 3D beat-em-up. It offered a varied selection of characters, most of whom wielded one type of blade or another, and there were several different fighting styles to get to grips with. Great stuff. Tekken 2, however, was one of the most anticipated beat-em-ups since the rise of the Street Fighter series from Capcom. Following on directly from its predecessor, Namco also put notable emphasis on character development and plotlines, particularly those within the Mishima empire. Familiar faces such as Yoshimitsu, Nina and King made a welcome return and several new characters and fighting styles were introduced. It was one of the most worthwhile sequels we have ever had the pleasure of seeing in the beat-em-up genre. Whatever your preference, both are great games, 'nuff said.

Newcomers to the system enjoyed the pick-up-and-play fighting mechanic, the lushly designed, fluidly animated characters, the bluer-than-blue skies and the outrageous lens flare. Owners o...

Virtua Fighter 4 EvolutionWhile a noisy majority hail Nintendo's Miyamoto as the godfather of the videogame, a swelling underground has swung towards Sega's Yu Suzuki as a man truly on top of his game. If you take as a given that Shenmue is the finest technical achievement of a console, and Virtua Fighter is the greatest reaction-based gaming series in existence, this argument holds up pretty well. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolut...

Resident Evil Director's CutBack in 1996, Capcom were to unveil something truly horrific. Something to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Is it a video game? Is it a horror movie? No, it's Resident Evil! Capcom's schlock horror adventure was so undeniably gory, yet so popular that a sequel was soon to follow. But when development problems occurred and delays of Resident Evil 2 were discovered, Capcom set o...
