Darkwatch, Sony Playstation
Darkwatch is a crossover title, taking the ever popular survival horror game and spinning it, setting it in the Old Wild West. You play Jericho Cross, just another outlaw trying to make an easy buck. With the law hot on his tail, Jericho figured it was time for one last job before hightailing it down to the Mexican border. But it all goes a bit wrong. Stopping a train to rob it, the hapless felon inadvertently unleashes a cursed Vampire Lord, who, as Vampire Lords tend to do, immediately sets about making life terribly unpleasant for pretty much everyone. That includes Jericho Cross, who managed to get bitten by the Dracul-alike and is now half vampire himself. Picked up by Darkwatch, an undead hunting syndicate, you are promptly commanded to clean up the mess you have just made, and free the West from the curse of the bloodsucker. With satisfying First Person blasting action, Darkwatch looks good too, drawing on the cinematic traditions of horror and westerns. A reputation system allows you to choose to be good or bad, and you inhabit a huge, atmospheric environment in which you carry out complex, non-linear missions against crafty enemies. But the best best is that you get to ride around on your horse shooting people, and the location-specific damage system means that you can blast holes out of the undead scum with delightful precision. All the time, there's something of a race against time going on - you must kill the Vampire Lord if you are to return to your normal outlaw life. But in the meantime, you get to take advantage of your newfound undead powers. For starters, you get supernatural strength and a 'blood shield' that acts as body armour taking a few hits before your body even feels a nick. Jericho Cross only had one eye, but the vampire infection within has given him a red eye in his old socket, which as well as looking pretty cool, allows you to identify undead fiends in human form. Your vampire strength also allows you to leap several times the height of a man. And there's also a selection of subsidiary powers, from silver bullets to the dangerous blood frenzy. An intriguing blend of horror and the wild west, Darkwatch is veritable root-tooting blood feast.

Headhunter: RedemptionA late entry on Dreamcast, Sega's stealth-puzzler Headhunter made relatively little noise when launched in 2001. But those who did have the pleasure of the DC adventure were kindly rewarded with a fine blend of level design, intuitive controls and character development. Almost three years on, a respected software-only Sega has put the finishing touches on Headhunder: Redemption, a direct sequel th...
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06As the EA machine rolls out another year's worth of licensed-up sports titles, it's great to see a name which has caused quite a stir in recent years. Yes, Tiger is back for another round in his very own Tiger Woods PGA Tour. What's made Tiger Woods such a successful title in the home gaming arena is the swing mechanic, with EA's rather inspired choice to adapt the roller ball style swing techniqu...
Fear Effect 2: Retro HelixFollowing the original Fear Effect, Eidos Interactive has once again teamed up with Kronos to develop a sequel that is an epic tale of horror and fantasy. Bizarrely subtitled, Retro Helix, Fear Effect 2 is yet another game that spans across a whopping four CD's. Part of the reasoning behind this, other than its size, is the use of a technology called Motion FX 3D. This feature means than in-game s...
Pro Evolution Soccer 5Ah verily, 'tis a thing of rare beauty, this game from Konami. EA's clunky, over-exposed and hugely overrated FIFA 06 may well sit atop the charts at the time of Pro Evolution Soccer 5's release, we reckon that this will change come the last week of October 2005, for a week or so at least. Pro Evolution Soccer really does deserve all the plaudits it gets from those footy fans more well informed th...
The Sum of All FearsIn the past, games based on the novels of Tom Clancy have enjoyed as much success as the books themselves. Developed by Red Storm, the original Rainbow Six brought with it a new depth to the PC first-person shooter and has since grown into a series, featuring numerous sequels and expansion packs. Red Storm's latest Tom Clancy game is based on the novel The Sum of All Fears, which has also been rec...
Burnout RevengeManna from heaven for those not sated by the Electronic Arts-ified Burnout Takedown from 2004, Revenge restates the case for BO's claim as the most insanely quick racing series around and will surely overtake everything in its path on its way to the top of the best-sellers list in 2005. Truth told, in the initial gameplay, there's not a great deal of difference between Takedown and Revenge; even a...
