Ace Combat: Squadron Leader, Sony Playstation
If killing is wrong, how come it feels so good? In the same way that if God didn't want us to eat animals, he surely, in all his divine wisdom, wouldn't have made them out of meat. And although a village pig slaughter in Tuscany - blood-catching and all - may not be too much fun, flying around in the world's most expensive military aircraft locking sidewinders most certainly is. So there's a balance to found somewhere, perhaps in Namco's latest Ace Combat offering, nattily subtitled Squadron Leader, though unfortunately no X-Wings are on offer. Set in the year 2010, the human race seemingly hasn't yet learnt that squandering massive sums of money on building death machines while half the world starves is unacceptable. A shame, but still, it makes for a good videogame. Anyway, on a small island in the ocean that divides the global superpowers of Osea and Yuktobania, an entire military base is on red alert. Early today, the 108th Tactical Fighter Squadron was scrambled to intercept an unidentified aircraft, but the entire squadron was ruthlessly decimated. As a fighter pilot in a newly formed squadron, you are called into action to protect the nation of Osea. As you take to the skies, the story begins to unfold... Pumped yet? Indeed! So it's time to slip into the unlicensed RayBans as Namco again offers up another PlayStation 2-squeezing rendition of mid-air flight fighting. This latest iteration offers a beefed-up version of the series. As well as the trademark Ace Combat graphical craft, Squadron Leader offers 50 licensed aircraft from the world's premier death-from-above manufacturers. It's also worth pointing out that the environments in which you get to fulfil your Tom Cruise fantasies are somewhat more colourful than in previous Ace Combat games. Whereas in the past you might have found yourself over the sea. For an hour. Then over a green island. For an hour. Well, now you have canyons and deliciously-rendered cities to dogfight above to your heart's content.

South Park RallyAs far as the PSX is concerned, the South Park franchise got off to a pretty good start, the primary release being the fun-fest that was Chef's Luv Shack. After the huge disappointment that was South Park itself comes '...Rally', and it's something of a return to form. Clearly, the lukewarm reaction South Park received must have sent messages to the powers that be. All the major characters from th...
Worms Open WarfareWorms Open Warfare (WOW) is a multi-player game that blends all-out action, strategy and sheer outrageous fortune. No game of WOW is ever the same, as both landscape and the placement of combatants are randomly generated, making it endlessly entertaining, with up to four teams of Worms able to battle it out thanks to the wonderful wireless facility. WOW can be played in a number of different ways:...
South ParkCartman, Kyle, Stan and Kenny make their PlayStation debut in a game that really can't decide which genre it wants to occupy. It could be an adventure, as you are charged with saving the town from being destroyed by a giant comet. It could be a platformer, as your character runs around the streets of South Park, meeting up with turkeys (yes, turkeys) and pelting them with snowballs to repel their ...
Pro Evolution Soccer 4Let's get this straight from the start. Konami make the best football games. Some of the club names may be a bit dodgy, the games' menus have been a bit of an ordeal to navigate in the past, and the referees offer more cards than Clinton at Xmas. EA may sell more of their FIFA games (across more platforms, remember?) and let's just not mention This is Appalling or Clubfoot Ball. There's no competi...
Pro Evolution SoccerKonami and football go together like peaches and cream. Pro Evolution Soccer for the PlayStation is the latest in a long line of high quality footy titles from the Japanese giant, this time following on from their hugely popular PS2 version of the same game. Konami obviously recognise that not everyone owns a PS2 (not yet, anyway) and are kind enough to let the PSX paupers see what all the fuss is...
European Super LeagueIt hasn't happened yet, and it probably can't happen soon enough for football clubs like Celtic and Rangers (it must be so frustrating to be a Scot and a fan of a team outside of the Old Firm...) but Virgin Interactive have taken the plunge and gone for fully licensed team and stadium endorsements glory. Scots will not be happy with VIE's choice of teams for this title however, as neither of the G...
