Death by Degrees, Sony Playstation
Tekken fans will recognise the name of Nina Williams, the beautiful and deadly assassin who features in Namco's long-running 3D beat-'em-up. Now Nina stars in her own spin-off game, an all-action single player beat-'em-up adventure, Death by Degrees. Nina is commissioned to investigate the whereabouts of a stolen high-tech weapon. With a 360 degree fighting system and an acrobatic hand-to-hand combat engine at her disposal, Nina must infiltrate a shadowy underworld and reveal conspiracy on a global scale. Use any means necessary-including stealth, espionage, ferocious gunplay and brutal weapon attacks-to recover the stolen goods and uncover the truth. The innovative 360 degree fighting system makes use of both analogue sticks to allow Nina to unleash combination flurries at enemies attacking from any direction. The 'X-ray vision' mode allows players to target the vital organs of enemies, and attack them without further ado using one of many weapons featured in the game. Firearms and martial arts blades like the tonfa and katana are available, though Nina is equally deadly with her bare feet and fists. All Nina's moves from Tekken can be used in the fast-paced adventure, including her speciality the Evil Mist. Not mindless action all the way, the game features stealth sections where you'll need to kill silently and undetected, and there's no shortage of eye candy with more than 100 hours of cinematic cut scenes, both pre-rendered and using in game graphics. Fighting game characters often have outlandish professions and background stories, but these characterisations are rarely expanded on. It's nice to see Namco utilising some already popular intellectual property and using it to give fans a treat.
