Colin McRae Rally 2005, Sony Playstation
We always rated the Colin McRae series of games very highly (except for the blip on the radar that was '3') and 2005 is everything its immediate predecessor was, and then some. What with this and a souped-up Toca Race Driver 2 heading to PlayStation 2 in October 2004, who really needs to wait for GT4 and its gleaming 'un-scratchable' depth and immersion? Codies have provided us with more than enough thrills and spills in Colin 2005. And the greatest thing about Codemasters' racers? As vintage punk types The Damned put it, you can “Smash it Up!” Now, you can't say that about Gran Turismo... More than 30 cars have been faithfully recreated for Colin McRae Rally 2005, including models from Volkswagen, Audi, Ford, Peugot, Renault, Lancia, Mitsubishi and Nissan (Colin's most recent fave rave, the Dakar Pickup, is included at the man's personal request). Vehicle classes and competitions are manifold, with CMR2005's deep, deep gameplay options providing 23 individual events and progression therein. If that's not enough for you in the single/two player experience, then the big bonus for PS2 owners is the Net Play facility. Even the most friendless misfit can get involved this time around with a mere Broadband Adapter, and knowing gamers like we do, this'll be one of CMR2005's big selling points. The realism in CM2005 has been turned up a notch or two too, with a new, improved damage engine in full effect. You'll flip out as your car flips, jettisons doors and crumples its bonnet on impact with whatever gets in the way. You'll even see something approaching double if you hit hard enough, gazing dazedly through your virtual visor after, say, running at high speed into a tree. You don't really need us to tell you anymore about Colin for 2005. Suffice to say that if you know Codemasters' track record with racing games, and you can blot out the memory of the disappointing CMR3, then you know what to do next.

BreakoutVideo game classics are often hard to come by once they are removed from the high street shelf, so what would you do if you were after a seventies classic? Well, normally it would be considered almost impossible to get hold of anything over ten years old. Those of you chasing a certain little bat and ball game called Break Out are in for a treat. The nice people at Hasbro have finally released a 3...
MusicMusic is that rarest of things, creative utility title for the staunchly games-orientated Playstation console. Although the Playstation has the power to be a 'multimedia player' like the 3D0 used to be, Sony has avoided the temptation to go down this route. Music flies in the face of this policy by bringing a fully fledged Music editing package to the Playstation. And a jolly good one too. By simp...
GladiusIt's clear from the picture on the box that Gladius isn't a tribute to ancient air fresheners. More like Maximus Destructus or whatever he was called... Gladius features a lot of sword-swinging from main characters Ursula and Valens. Ursula, from the land of Nordagh, is the daughter of a barbarian king. Valens is the son of one of Imperia's finest gladiators of all time. A raging conflict between ...

The Next TetrisIn the middle of the 1980's, a fiendishly addictive puzzle game called Tetris was invented in the former Soviet Union. Alexey Pajitnov, the man behind the game, was a guy with a lifelong love of puzzles, and often programmed games to test new computer equipment. In 1985 he decided to program the traditional puzzle Pentamino in real time. However, positioning five-square blocks in such a manner was...
Football FactoryThe Football Factory is more than just a study of the English obsession with football violence, its about men looking for armies to join, wars to fight and places to belong. A forgotten culture of Anglo Saxon males fed up with being told they're not good enough and using thier fists as a drug they describe as being more potent than sex and drugs put together. Shot in documentery style with the ene...
