Alien Hominid, Sony Playstation
Ah, the good old days of 2D gameplay. Precision, controllability, definite edges and collision detection. Such wonderful times. Now it's not just a small stubborn enclave of Japanese developers who staunchly carry on with the old ways of 2D gaming. A group of anti-3D types who call themselves The Behemoth are releasing a platform shooter in the Contra Spirits/Sunset Riders/Gunstar Heroes/Metal Slug mould. It's published in the UK by Zoo Digital and it's called Alien Hominid. The Hominid in fact started life as a Flash game available for free download on the internet. Everything has been re-drawn and re-coded now, to take advantage of the powerful games consoles whose screens it will now grace. While joyriding in its new spaceship, Alien Hominid crash lands in front of FBI headquarters, and narrowly escapes with only its alien hide. Alien Hominid must find its spaceship and get off this rock before its vicious human enemies find it and cart it off to Area 51. Along the way, A.H. relies on its deadly melee skills and advanced weapons to outsmart the ever-cunning enemies who want to probe it for alien secrets It now has an amazing 200 levels. The little Alien Hominid can jump, shoot, ride enemies and carry them. Seven amazing levels of power-ups are available. The explosions are enormous, the bosses completely huge: so huge in fact that the camera has to zoom out to fit them in. This is a game hand-crafted by people who loved the fast, simple action of old. Brilliantly, it can now be played by two players too. Humorous, UFO-chasing gameplay, and not an evil, meddling games publisher in sight. Go on, buy it, then they'll have the money to make another one.

Tenchu: Wrath of HeavenCovert sneaking around and performing silent-but-deadly assassinations are all the rage in games these days - thanks, in part, to a number of PSX games in the 1990's that introduced the much-vaunted 'stealth' element.
