Phantom Brave, Sony Playstation
Phantom Brave, from developer Nippon Ichi, is a strategic role-play game in the same vein as Disgaea: Hour of Darkness and La Pucelle: Tactics, both titles from the same software house. From the turn-based RPG school of thought, the player must build his characters' strength and abilities, moving them about the expansive isometric map in the land of Ivoire. The game's central character is Marona, a young girl shunned by society as a witch. Marona is able to summon Ash, the 'Phantom Brave' of the title, to fight for her. Ash is a heroic young warrior trapped between life and death; but as the game progresses, Marona becomes able to summon more and different, ghostly guardians from beyond the grave. With these spectral companions she is able to undertake contracts for various mercenary missions, thus earning money, meeting more ghosts she can summon, and so on. Combat features an unusual mechanic in that Marona's invisible friends, if they are to be used, must be summoned into an inanimate object such as a rock or tree. The character then takes on certain attributes from the object chosen, so for instance they may be stronger if the object was a rock. The game features free-roaming battle maps instead of the more traditional RPG 'grid' system, and a system whereby the player can fully customise their characters. Publishers KOEI boast that the game will satisfy even the hardiest of RPG gamers with over 100 hours of gameplay and limitlessly variable dungeon maps.

Crash Team RacingCrash Team Racing... get it? You see it's Crash Bandicoot in a racing game with loads of crash action. There's precious little team play though... There are about a million reasons why you should get his game, particularly if you enjoyed SCARS. Firstly, lets get things straight, this is Super Mario Cart for those without an N64. A Character previously much-loved from platform games gets himself a ...
Pro Evolution Soccer 4Let's get this straight from the start. Konami make the best football games. Some of the club names may be a bit dodgy, the games' menus have been a bit of an ordeal to navigate in the past, and the referees offer more cards than Clinton at Xmas. EA may sell more of their FIFA games (across more platforms, remember?) and let's just not mention This is Appalling or Clubfoot Ball. There's no competi...
FIFA 2001The FIFA series from Electronic Arts is one of the most populated franchises to date. With instalments of the game produced every year from the late eighties, the game has been refined many times, and FIFA 2001 shows the development improvements quite well. This latest release, available as a graphically lush PS2 title, features motion-captured animation from Lothar Matthaus. With its official lic...
Donald Duck Quack AttackIt appears that developers Ubi Soft have a reasonably close relationship with Disney Interactive. With the launch of PlayStation 2, the relationship continues with the release of Donald Duck: Quack Attack. Ubi Soft has a great background in the platform genre with the release of the Rayman series. Continuing the 3D platform catalogue in a linear fashion, similar to that in Crash Bandicoot, Quack A...
Wild Wild RacingIn the days of the first 3D consoles of Saturn, PlayStation and Nintendo 64, certain video game genres became exhausted with 3D experiments that didn't live up to scratch on the high street shelves. One such genre is the racing game. It's true that there are a reasonable number of top-class racers out there, but there are also many poor interpretations. Rage's reputation as a 3D developer is a goo...
NBA Live 2005Where some of you might think another year, another update, it still remains true that each time Electronic Arts brings us its latest efforts in the world of sports, these games usually represent a significant improvement in both graphics and in gameplay. And by and large the same is true of NBA Live 2005. Players expecting improved visuals, less bugs, and more gameplay options have been given exa...
