18 Wheeler American Pro Trucker, Nintendo GameCube
After previous outings on Dreamcast and PS2, Sega's all-American, arcade juggernaut simulator comes to the Gamecube, complete with myriad denim, lumberjack shirts and Grizzly Adams beards - Yee-Haa. Obviously lacking the huge model truck cab of the arcade, this version places the player in the driving seat of a 10 ton truck in some of the craziest races you're ever likely to see, retaining all the over-the-top qualities of the original. The idea is pretty much straightforward: Race through the United States, against rival truckers, from New York to Key West, to Dallas, Las Vegas and, finally, San Francisco, totalling over 5,000 miles of road. It's also against the clock, so care has to be taken and, although not much of a threat to a speeding truck, other traffic avoided where possible. The occasional time bonus can be found by hitting certain vehicles, thus helping a little towards making the next checkpoint, and shortcuts are scattered throughout, which are often a necessity when the clock is ticking. Between levels, skill-related mini-games, such as parking, reward the aspiring truck champion with power-ups for the vehicle. As far as modes are concerned, 18 Wheeler features Arcade Mode, Parking Challenge and Score Attack. In addition, split-screen two-player Versus Mode, multiple raceways and several stages of mini games add a bit more life to what is, admittedly, not the longest game around. This is, at the end of the day, a pure arcade game. It's a great deal of fun, it's gorgeous to look at and it's by Sega. Enough said. “...And a big hello to all you truckers out there...”

Tak 2: The Staff of DreamsThe first Tak game, Tak and the Power of Juju, was an action platformer. Set in a distant tribal past, it followed the adventures of Tak, a shaman's apprentice, who must save his village from the evil Juju Man. Juju was the game's name for magic, and as well as being able to run, jump, hit and swing, Tak could learn 17 magical spells to help him on his adventure, which included transforming into a...
Namco Museum 50th AnniversaryAh, 1980...we remember it well, and not just for gaming reasons. But that's another story for another time, but indulge us, if you will, for a moment. Up at the Youth Club (is there still such a thing in 2006?) the half-sized snooker table had been abandoned, along with the table tennis, the bar football and the record player(!). The Pong and Breakout 'sit-downs' had come and gone and been replace...
Samurai Jack: The Shadow of AkuWhere some games offer innovation and a creative approach, others can fall short of the mark by merely imitating those with merit. However, those that are simply 'inspired' by world renowned video game creations should not be pigeon-holed as copies, and the same is true of Sega's Samurai Jack. Though the game's style is distinct and faithful to the cartoon series, a mere glance at the game's visua...
FIFA Football 2003Another year, another edition of FIFA Football, but this time on a spanking new platform, the Nintendo GameCube, and, we're assured by Electronic Arts, a new 'built from the ground up' playing experience. Verily, FIFA Football 2003 breaks the odd number hoodoo suffered in the 1999 and 2001 versions and is set to take on all-comers for premier status in footy fans' hearts. Think of the FIFA series,...
Mega Man Network TransmissionCapcom's MegaMan series appears on GameCube for the first time with the release of this latest platform/shooter, Network Transmission. Staying faithful to the game's predecessors, the game retains the familiar side-on, scrolling action, albeit powered by a visually impressive cel-shading 3D engine - a welcome and rather novel concept these days. As the story goes, it's been a month since the evil ...
Hot Wheels Highway 35 World RaceOne of the biggest franchises around, Mattel's Hot Wheels series of miniature racing collectibles is hugely popular with kids, and perhaps even a few older collectors. Hot Wheels continues to evolve, and has made more than a dozen appearances in video games. That trend is set to continue with the release of World Race for GameCube. Thrust into the Hot Wheels fantasy world once again, players are c...
