Rally Championship, Nintendo GameCube
Rally Championship has been a long time coming on GameCube, following some eight months after the PS2 version. It's Sci's first rally release for the purple box and it's a good example of what the GameCube hardware is capable of, given the right treatment. Set over four separate regions, including Arctic terrains in Finland, the Grand Canyon banks in the USA and English country roads, the game features six different rallies and 24 hardcore stages. Four classes of car make up the selection of vehicles, including Privateer, 1600 modified, 2 litre modified, Class A8, whilst a further three secret classic models are available for unlocking. All cars are officially licensed, so one can expect to pick from all the favourites such as the Subaru Impreza, Mitsubishi Evolution and Ford Escort. Rally Championship features four game modes in all, the main single player game being Career Mode. Career Mode places the player in a full rally season with the aim being to win enough cash to upgrade or replace the car throughout the course of the competition. Quick Game and Arcade Mode offer their self-explanatory 'quick fixes' for the impatient busy people amongst you, whilst a multi-player mode offers Time Trials or head-on, 2-4 player split screen racing. One of the game's main assets is its comprehensive physics engine. Simulation of both two and four-wheel drive handling is present as well as a sophisticated car damage system, which can simulate a seizure due to radiator damage. Further efforts to increase realism have been made with the inclusion of an advanced weather system (recreating snow, rain, sunrise, sunset), well sampled sound effects and an assistant co-driver who navigates the courses. In the absence of a Colin McRae Rally 3 for GameCube, Rally Championship makes a good substitute and a fine game in its own right.

Charlie's AngelsNow it's not like the games industry to overlook a money-spinning movie licence but, strangely enough, this one was missed the first time around, when the first Charlie's Angels remake was released in 2000. Things are different this time, however, as the sequel, Full Throttle, comes complete with a game tie-in, which sees the bottom-kicking beauties appear in virtual form for the first time. Alrea...
Madden NFL 2003Another year, another improved Madden NFL game. This policy of Electronic Arts may seem a little repetitive, but it ensures that year on year, gamers are getting the best virtual incarnation of their favourite sports games. NFL is not a big sport here in the UK, but it's one that EA has been pushing, with notable success, for the last thirteen years. More than a decade on, and Madden NFL 2003 is r...
Kelly Slater's Pro SurferAnother extreme sport, another world champion endorsement, another world champion-endorsed extreme sports sim from Activision. This time it's surfing and the packaging reads Kelly Slater, the six-time world champion of the sport. Released across the majority of gaming platforms, Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer enables players to experience all the thrills of the world's first extreme sport without even ...
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3Already released for PS2 and Xbox some time ago, the latest instalment in Red Storm's Tom Clancy-inspired tactical shooter has now made what is gradually becoming the rather endangered port to GameCube. The game is more or less a direct conversion, albeit without the offer of an Internet-based multiplayer mode. As is normally the case in the R6 series, you take command of an elite, multinational s...
Donkey KongaIt's often the simplest ideas that are the best. Witness the popularity of all the contemporary dance mat-utilising games and Sony's EyeToy for example. You don't often see games shop window displays full of played and traded items like these - unless they're hidden behind all the DreamCast steering wheels. Falling into the category marked 'Inventive/Gimmicky, but a bloody good laugh', an epiphet ...
Super Monkey BallSuper Monkey Ball is the first Sega game to appear on the GameCube and it shines as one of the best party games available on any system. The twist with Super Monkey is that you don't control your monkey in a ball, you control the environments. Think of Marble Madness with moveable backgrounds, add lots of party and mini-games and that's what Super Monkey Ball is like. The main game of Monkey Ball ...
