Def Jam Vendetta, Nintendo GameCube
A rough and tumble game of underground street fighting, so-called honour, and respect, Def Jam Vendetta is one of Electronic Arts' more mature and graphic gaming ventures. It's no holds barred here, so prepare yourself for one of the toughest, most enduring rides of your life as a fighter. This beat-em-up adventure, in which you must fight to survive and your means to live, plays host to 45 roughneck characters and 12 Def Jam artists including Method Man, Redman, Scarface and Capone... you see where this is going? There are some 1,500 moves to learn, spread across several fighting techniques, which include reverse kicks, martial arts swings, choke holds and elbow blocks. However, familiarising yourself with such a vast library of moves and then learning how to string some of your moves together takes time and lots of practice. Introducing an extra element of strategy is a unique momentum and health system that changes based on the players' status. The better they play, the more strength and stamina they have. And if you perform well enough for long enough you'll unleash a special attack upon your opponent that can sometimes render them unconscious. Graphically, Def Jam is a fine game to look at. It abandons the traditional and predictable ring-and-stadium environment in favour of more varied and dark fighting locales. It's refreshing and can make the world of difference to how the game is perceived. Arcade-style gameplay is something Electronic Arts is very good at, and with Battle and Survival modes, a selection of match types and sound design from DaneTracks (responsible for some of the sounds heard in The Matrix and 8 Mile) included for the finished article, Def Jam Vendetta is one of the most diverse and atmospheric beat-em-ups we've seen for a long time.

Conflict: Desert Storm IILaunched in 2002, SCi's original Desert Storm game had considerable impact thanks to its graphic realism and gritty content. In 2003 a sequel followed for PS2, Xbox and PC, but the GameCube version was nowhere to be seen. It may have taken a little while longer, but Desert Storm II is finally available for Nintendo loyalist the world over. Again set in the hostile environment of the Gulf War, Dese...
Ace GolfWe've seen a few of these in the past; pick-up-and-play golf games that fuse accurately modelled physics with comical characters and fun 3D environments. That is by no means a bad thing though, for any game that can even come close to matching the brilliant Mario Golf should be given serious consideration. Well, Ace Golf is such a game, and it does indeed bear more than a passing resemblance to Ma...
Beyond Good & EvilAs with the recent Price of Persia, this Ubisoft game received a pre-Christmas (2003) release on the PS2 and PC, only to be kept back for a couple of months worth of tweaking and porting for the other versions. If you've been waiting for the GameCube version, or are likely to be tempted by the prospect of an adventure game that combines elements of action, platforming, stealth, beat-em-up, and RPG...

Spider-Man 2: The MovieAlways popular in video games, Marvel's Spider-Man has graced consoles for many years, but of course it wasn't until the dawn of PlayStation and Saturn et al that the spandex-clad super-hero was born in 3D. 2002's Spider-Man, based upon the movie of the same name, was once the most successful offering, but that all changes with Spider-Man 2, Activision's next 3D-action game, based on the Sam Raimi...
X-Men 2: Wolverine's RevengeActivision has held the license to publish and develop X-Men video games for several years now, overseeing the release of many popular mutant beat-em-ups, and the company is keeping with tradition for its next release - X-Men 2: Wolverine's Revenge on GameCube.
