Evolution Skateboarding, Nintendo GameCube
Skateboarding adventure, anyone? Now there's a concept you don't see everyday. In a bold effort to break the mould in extreme sports games, Konami has taken the mission-based efforts of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 a step further with Evolution Skateboarding. On the face of it, Evolution is near identical to its rivals. Players can choose from any of eight pro skaters, each with 'access' to unique locations to different parts of the world and consequently, different skating environments. There are a remarkable 25 custom levels to tackle in the game's Challenge mode, and players must execute a series of high scoring tricks through a combination of button presses and d-pad movements - a formula that is quickly becoming a tradition in the genre. Meeting certain objectives, or beating certain benchmark scores gives you access to some of the game's secrets that include hidden characters. But there is one significant feature that no other extreme sports title bears, and that's Boss Skate mode. A completely original idea within the genre, players must face a barrage of attacks from super-sized beasts such as 18-wheel trucks. There is a specific way to destroy each boss, you just have to figure out what it is. Beyond that, you're free to skate at your own leisure. As with most skateboarding games, Evolution Skateboarding's longevity lies in its scoring system. Difficult tricks and combinations are typically rewarded with a greater number of points, with the main objective being to score as much as possible. Once you've set that seemingly unbeatable benchmark, show it to your friend and give him something to work towards. This kind of competition can stretch a game's life no end.
