2006 FIFA World Cup, Nintendo GameCube
2006 FIFA World Cup lets gamers and soccer fans experience every footballer's dream of bringing home the biggest prize in world football. This EA Sports game challenges you to lead a nation's team through the highs and lows of qualification, as you play teams from your chosen continent in order to amass enough points to take you to the World Cup Finals. Alternatively, you can skip the qualifying and get straight to the tournament in all its Teutonic finery. As you compete in the 2006 FIFA World Cup mode, you get a passport which gets stamped every time you beat another team. Every country you defeat earns you a stamp, with bonuses for completing a FIFA WC Zone. Points can be earned as you conquer teams from around the world, and these can be spent in the virtual store, to buy kits and players, etc. There's a virtual magazine available in-game too, with all the news and statistics to keep you abreast of all the tournament's happenings. There's an interesting Objectives mode included in 2006 FIFA World Cup which comes with a range of demands, such as providing a feast of goals to keeping your team's hopes alive against the odds. You can practise your spot kicks in the Penalty Shootout so you're ready for those tense moments after extra time has elapsed with neither team able to get ahead. But 2006 FIFA World Cup is really all about the tournament itself, and it's comprehensive alright. We like to think we're well-travelled men of the world, but Cape Verde from the African qualifying group caught us out and had us reaching for the world atlas - at least until we noticed that the game menu was showing us in pinpoint detail where this island is. And did you know that Paraguayans have two native languages? No, us neither, until we started to pay attention to the menu screens. Very educational. 2006 FIFA World Cup is sufficiently different from EA's aesthetically similar FIFA 06 - no faffing about too much with the management side of things for a start - and the strict tournament qualifying structure is a boon somehow. At the time of the game's original release, we're just a few weeks away from the tournament for real, and 2006 FIFA World Cup is the ideal warm up.

IkarugaThe fact that Infogrames signed Ikaruga is amazing enough. The fact that it will be released exclusively for GameCube cements this 1999 coin-op in the annuls of history as perhaps the greatest triumph of gamer demand over what has to be seen as key strategic and financial sense. Ikaruga began life as a low-key arcade title some years ago, released only into Japan on Sega's Naomi board. And amazing...
Chicken LittleDisney's Chicken Little brings the excitement of the film to life and allows you to live the adventures of Chicken Little and his gang of misfit friends - Fish-Out-of-Water, Runt of the Litter and Abby Mallard - and to master loads of cool and unique gadgets. The game has some quirky features taken from the movie - including yo-yos, cannons, alien suits, rocket jet packs, slingshots and hoverboard...
Shrek 2Along with lunchboxes, toys, t-shirts and Happy Meals there's nearly always a similarly-endorsed videogame tied in to the children's blockbuster movie these days. Shrek 2 is no different, with the duties for the console versions having been given to developer Luxoflux, and the result taking the form of a 3D action platformer, full of the usual array of exploration and puzzle-solving. The storyline...
Beach Spikers: Virtua Beach VolleyballVolleyball's a great way to pass the time on a beach, but unless you're one of those lucky types who has sand on the doorstep, Beach Spikers, thanks to its top-notch gameplay, lush graphics and numerous game options and modes (not to mention the lovely ladies in bikinis, fellas) is the ideal substitute. In volleyball, your team must send the ball over the net to the opponent's side of the court so...
Smuggler's Run: WarzonesWhen Rockstar made the decision to develop Smuggler's Run, it was inevitable that the game's controversial theme alone would sell the game. Sex, and particularly violence, are now intermittent visitors to video games, but smuggling is something rarely touched upon. Smuggler's Run's success isn't solely founded on immoral plot lines - it's also a really good game. Now it's coming to GameCube. Offer...
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06As the EA machine rolls out another year's worth of licensed-up sports titles, it's great to see a name which has caused quite a stir in recent years. Yes, Tiger is back for another round in his very own Tiger Woods PGA Tour. What's made Tiger Woods such a successful title in the home gaming arena is the swing mechanic, with EA's rather inspired choice to adapt the roller ball style swing techniqu...
